“In this richly imagined start to a new sci-fi series, Reed brings optimism to the goal of solving entrenched violence in a galaxy far, far away . . . A propulsive, sharply crafted tale about a planetary war.” -Kirkus Reviews
Breaker’s home is cleaved by blood. The three tribes on the planet Scarlatti, whose only difference is their blood color, each want to exploit Breaker’s valley for themselves. The feudal tension has already claimed red-blood Breaker’s leg and his older brother. Now all this 18-year old wants is to maintain the tenuous peace in order to keep his little ‘stroid of a brother alive. Malani, a red-blood raised blue, is a kidnapped POW and only wants to return to her adoptive home with her dangerous blue secrets. Luka, a red-blood stewing for trouble, wants to right wrongs done to his family and bath his home in justice.
All three intersect when Breaker discovers a wrecked starship and is given seven days by the green-bloods to fix and hand it over as a weapon. Breaker must decide if aiding his enemies is worth the home he knows and his family’s life. War is coming. And war respects no boundaries. And war leaves no survivors.

Excerpt:

The mountain range I stood on was shaped like an upside down U. This fortress perched on the western end, in the Heron Mountains. Straight across to the eastern side of the U-shape laid the Elik Mountains, where Houtiri, the Elik glass city, was located.
The asteroid hung low, shrouding the Elik Mountains in shadow, but I swear I could almost touch its knobbed side. Our ring stripe reflected a pinky gold, cutting straight through the sky until it disappeared into the north. The wind intensified, sweeping dirt and soil over the cliff, rippling the trees below like water waves.
Directly between the green- and blue-bloods, besides a whole lotta ill will, laid the valley. A river cut down the middle of the U like the main prong of a pitchfork. It collected into a dwarf lake beyond the mouth of the U before funneling off further south beyond a wall of fog. I couldn’t tell where it disappeared. A desert? Even with two suns, the light wasn’t enough to burn off the thick fog.
This was why we stayed in the valley even though we were surrounded by enemies. Beyond the mountains in the north stretched the ocean—good luck building homes on the waves—check that direction off the option list. And through the fog to the south? Our ancestors tried exploring several times, but nobody returned. They opted to remain with the enemy they did know rather than the enemy they didn’t.
I never appreciated before why they called this planet Scarlatti. From the burgundy and blush trees to the carmine peaks to the ruby glow of the suns, this land wore a blanket of blood.
